Which browser do you use?
By Dirk Bansch
In the beginning, everything was easy. You just used email and ftp, and maybe bulletin boards. Then, when the world wide web was created (or intelligently designed), we had to use a graphical interface to browse and surf properly. Again, that was easy, because you used Netscape. Then, Internet Explorer came onto the market and after a few years we had to admit that IE was getting better than Netscape. And then everything seemed to stall. There was only IE and nothing else and nobody was really happy with IE anymore. Fortunately, nowadays we are spoilt for choice. We have Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and Safari. So, which to use? Maybe I have problems making a decision, but I use all of them... Opera is great, because you can have 10 windows open, close the program and when you start it again, all 10 windows are still there. Love it! Google Chrome is very fast. Problem is, that it seems to display some web pages differently than other browsers, which is why I would not use it to check whether I am happy with my site design. Firefox has so many cool and useful add-ons that it is nearly as good as Opera. Pretty fast, too. Safari is okay. Good to use on a Mac (although there is a PC version). I have just started getting to grips with Macs, so it might take me a while to be totally enamored with it. And guess what? I still use IE for some webpages, especially commercial ones, as for instance the webpages of my local Council only seem to work properly when using IE. Choice is good! |

To be honest, I don't really see that the marginal differences between browser options and performance are much to shout about. What I would like to see is a selection of browsers that will interpret the code on my web site in the same way so that when I use them to view other's web sites, I'll know that I am looking at what they intended me to see. For example, IE shows my sites the way I designed them but Firefox moves tables and graphics on some pages while Chrome doesn't reproduce the colours favourably all the time. Surely the first job of a browser is to show what is supposed to be there - not change it?
i use IE basically because thats what i have always used, but do agree with 'theoldcoot' no matter what you use, you should see what you put in.
I only use IE for some sites I need for my financial business - they only work in IE. Other than that I use Firefox, mainly for all the add-ons as you say. If you use the Session Manager then you can have multiple tabs saved as a set and re-open the group at any time. As good as Opera I'd think As "theoldcoot" says I can't think of any reason why anything should be displayed in anyway but the way it was intended. Oh yes, if you're into Social Sites have a look at the Flock browser. Based on Firefox so most add-ons etc work but really cool integration with Twitter, Facebook etc etc
I have Google Chrome. It does seem to crash a lot.
I have been using FireFox mostly. Actually it's all I use now. I found it helped to turn the history off.
We currently use IE and Firefox with minor problems. Thank you for sharing this information, Dirk. As usual, the comments also add value. Best wishes. Frederick
Yes, I use Firefox for most web browsing. It is the best for most of what I do. I only use IE if there is some kind of problem, getting Firefox to launch.
G'day Dirk, Generally I try to use ie just to view my hotmail. I use Chrome a lot but I have been inclining to Firefox of late. I have been using firefox because I found an add on that allows me to record video from any of the training sites that expect me to return to site to view the videos again. For me this is an added expense I don't need as I have wireless internet. Also I found an add on that records my logins as well. I don't use ie very much because as the most used browser (installed by default by windows) it is subject to the most hack attacks. There is an independent group established to standardize HTML (the code used on pages to make them viewable in all browsers.) Microsoft, the all powerful god of the internet, has introduced it's own variants to html code. There will always be variation while Microsoft tries its hardest to impose its domination over the world of computing. Wishing you all the best. Reg More about my interests here. Flock is good webbrowser too. Your right choice is very good, we have lots of choice now, well done.
I use Firefox with my desktop computer and find that just fine. But my son set me up with Linux,Ubuntu on my acer laptop, still learning to use it, but I quite like it, hopefully this will be easier to work with for virus protections. Maybe someone can comment on this. Elsie
Firefox for me!
FireFox and Chrome all the way. IE for testing only. Robert, Unbuntu should definitely help with virus protection. It is pretty much a virus free OS.
