Sell by smell
By Dirk Bansch of Summit Consulting & Training Ltd
As every salesperson knows, it is highly important to grab the potential buyer's attention and also to make an excellent first impression. The following story was related to me at a sales seminar. I was delivering the event and had asked whether the delegates had any specific opening that made them memorable to prospective customers. One guy told this story: It was his first day at his new sales job. He was to go to several offices and try to get an appointment and hopefully sell some products. His first visit was to a brand new office. Everything spankingly clean, new yellow carpets, the place looked impeccable. So he walked to the receptionists desk and asked whether the person in charge of purchasing was available. The response: "What's that smell? OH NO, LOOK WHAT YOU DID TO OUR NEW CARPETS!" Yep, he had stepped into some doggy doo and had dragged it into the shiny new offices, distributing it over the new carpets on his way to the receptionists desk. What can you do in such a situation? He asked for a bucket of warm water and some cloth and tried to clean up his mess. He said it took him two hours and he still didn't get everything out of the carpet, and during that time, half the company walked past him, making jokes or commiserating with him. Pretty bad first impression, but a few weeks later he called the company and when he asked for the person in charge of purchasing, the question was: "Who may I say is calling?" "The guy with the poo on his shoe!" He says that this line worked every time with this particular company and he and the purchasing manager always had a great time talking about his first visit. Maybe I should have asked him if he really did this with only one company...

I know you can buy artificial poo to use for whatever purpose, perhaps I will carry some around with me and pretend that it was real. I wonder if it would increase my success rate of getting to see the person in charge.... one can but try ;)
