Interesting jobs I had, part 2

By Dirk Bansch

When I first moved to England, I worked as a freelance computer trainer, while training myself up to become a therapist.

I had quite a lot of time on my hands, so I was applying for other jobs and very quickly found my dream job: chocolate taster!

A major international food company had one of their main production plants in the city I lived in and they were holding tryouts for two spots on their milk chocolate panel.
Dozens of people applied and I was lucky (or chocolate-savvy enough) to get the job.

Can you imagine? You get to taste chocolate and get paid for it?

It was only four hours per week, but I had a great time for about two years before I had to move on due to other commitments.

As a chocolate taster your job was to taste different kinds of chocolate and assign grades in the following areas:
astringent, bitter, sweet, acidic, and chocolatey.

Sounds lovely, but only if you are given Swiss, Belgian, German, etc. chocolate to taste. Very often we had to taste products from India, Russia, and the US, which made you question other nation's tastebuds.
Russian chocolate was probably the worst, but I also grew to hate American chocolate, because to me, it just tasted stuffy and sour.

One little tip for aspiring chocolate tasters: You don't have to eat everything they give you. You can take a bite, experience the taste, and assign your grade.

On my first day of tasting, we were given 9 different kinds of "Lion" chocolate bars and I ate them all. It nearly turned me off chocolate for good...

I'm sure a lot of people would think "Oh great, I get to eat all the chocolate I want." But, I can see that would soon get very old. Not to mention, raising your blood sugar.

It was actually not that uncommon for members of the chocolate panel to go to the factory shop afterwards and buy chocolate...

I have to ask -- how much weight did you gain? LOL

You would think that such a job would lead to weight gain, but at that point in time I did not have a car, so walked two miles each way which kept me quite fit...

It sounds OK to taste different chocolates and to valuate them. However, imagine that you were working in a chocolate factory for a long time. I had a friend who did. In the end. she couldn't stand the smell of chocolate any more.
