An important date in the fight against slavery

We are coming up to an important date in the history of the fight against slavery. And it might surprise you. April 6, 2011 will be the anniversary of the British Parliament outlawing slavery. Which anniversary? The first one! That's right, while slavery was abolished throughout the British Empire in 1833, it was never outlawed in the UK itself. Britain did not have any slaves since Elizabeth I. freed the last remaining serfs in 1574, but during the rise of Britain as a colonial power, many rich merchant adventurers brought home "black manservants" (who were slaves), because it was the fashionable thing to do. In 1772 Lord Mansfield allegedly stated that "The air of England is too pure for any slave to breathe" and thousands of slaves in England were given their freedom. So, slavery was illegal in England under Common Law since 1772, but this was only confirmed by Parliament in 2010. Better late than never! |

Great history lesson. Thanks for sharing.
From what I understand this law makes it possible to proscute those who are involved in human trafficking. 14 years in prison sounds about right.

You're right. Until now it was quite difficult to prosecute modern day slave traders. There is a difference between abolishing something and making it illegal.
I wonder if it would have taken so long if it was the other way around?

It all sounds very interesting. However, I was unable to download the free DVD information packet. Tenerife Island Spain is not the worst place in the world for downloads. I have 3MB normal expensive internet connection and I had to give up. The DVD just didn't want to open. First, I went cooking and then I tried again. Nothing doing... There is no problem with utube videos, though. Sorry to inform you about that.

Not quite sure what you mean. Did you click on an advertisement?
Now, that you say so, I clicked on the advertisement on the right in this page which reads 'Get your free DVD and information packet today'. However, this info was all about the human rights.

It's amazing how many laws are on the books, that don't get the job done. We think that we need to reinvent the wheel, when all we need to do in amend it for today's use.
